How to Use the Car Maintenance Cost Trend Calculator
As a car ages, maintenance frequency and cost naturally increase. This calculator takes your car's current age, annual mileage, and last year's actual maintenance cost to project the maintenance cost trend for the next 5 years.
Cost Growth Pattern by Age
Cars typically see gentle cost growth through year 3, faster growth from years 4-6 as consumables wear out, and sharp increases from year 7 onward as parts age. This calculator applies default growth rates of 5% per year through year 3, 10% for years 4-6, 15% for years 7-9, and 20% for year 10 and beyond.
Mileage Adjustment
If annual mileage exceeds 10,000 miles, a 2 percentage point premium is added; above 18,000 miles, a 5 point premium applies. Results vary by make, model, and shop, so use this as a reference and track your actual maintenance spending over time for comparison.
Frequently Asked Questions
Part wear, shorter consumable replacement cycles, and warranty expiration all cause maintenance frequency and cost to rise with age.
Higher annual mileage shortens replacement cycles for tires, oil, and brakes, increasing the maintenance cost growth rate.
If projected maintenance cost is disproportionately high versus the car's value, consider replacing or selling the vehicle.
