How to use the RSU vesting value calculator

Restricted stock units (RSUs) are company shares you receive for staying through a vesting schedule. Enter the units granted, an assumed share price, the total vesting term, the cliff, the vesting frequency and how many months have passed since the grant date to see what has vested and what it is worth.

The cliff is the first date anything vests. Before the cliff the cumulative total is zero; after it, the remaining units vest on the frequency you pick. The tool prorates units by elapsed months over the full term, rounds fractional units down, and delivers the balance in the final tranche.

In the US, RSUs are generally taxed as ordinary income at vesting. The tax line here is simply your entered rate applied to the pre-tax value, not a filing figure, and this tool does not calculate the capital gain or loss from selling the shares later. Rates and withholding methods vary, so confirm yours with a tax professional.

Frequently asked questions

When are RSUs taxed in the US?

RSUs are generally taxed as ordinary income at vesting, based on the fair market value of the shares on the vesting date. If you hold the shares and sell later, any change in price after vesting is treated as a capital gain or loss. Confirm your own rates with a tax professional.

What happens if I leave before the cliff?

Under most grant agreements nothing has vested before the cliff date, so you keep nothing. This calculator also returns zero vested units whenever the months elapsed are shorter than the cliff.

Will I receive exactly the amount shown?

No. The share price you enter is an assumption, and the price on each future vesting date will differ. Many employers also withhold a portion of the shares to cover taxes (sell to cover), so the units that actually land in your account depend on your grant agreement and company policy.
