How to use the parcel shipping unit cost calculator
Parcel spend scales with every order you ship, so free-shipping thresholds and pricing decisions both depend on knowing what one package really costs. This calculator works out billable weight, adds packaging and an allowance for returns, and gives you a cost per shipment and a monthly total.
Carriers bill the greater of actual and dimensional weight. Dimensional weight is length ร width ร height divided by a DIM divisor, rounded up to the next whole pound, and actual weight is rounded up too. A light but bulky box is therefore charged on its size, not its scale weight. The result label says which of the two was applied, so a surprisingly high figure is easy to trace.
No rates are built in. Base charges, per-pound rates and the DIM divisor all vary by carrier, service level and negotiated contract, so take them from your own rate agreement or a recent invoice rather than a published list. Returns are spread across all shipments: the return rate multiplied by freight plus handling cost is allocated to every outbound order.

It is set by your carrier agreement and differs between carriers, service levels and negotiated contracts, so read it off your own rate sheet. A smaller divisor produces a larger dimensional weight and a higher bill.
Only by shrinking the box. When dimensional weight is driving the charge, right-sizing cartons or switching to poly mailers cuts the cubic inches, and the billable weight falls back to the actual weight once the box is small enough.
